Covering the bus ride, immigration process, initial impressions of Nepal, and travel tips, it serves as a practical guide for overland travelers seeking budget-friendly and immersive exploration of Nepal.
India and Nepal share not only borders but deep-rooted cultural, historical, and spiritual ties. For budget travelers and backpackers, the overland route from India to Nepal offers a raw and real experience, often overlooked by those who fly. This article presents my journey from Lanka, Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) to Birgunj, Nepal, via the Raxaul border, focusing on the logistics, formalities, and sensory experiences of this unique cross-border passage.
Route and Transportation
Route Overview:
-
Origin: Varanasi (Lanka), Uttar Pradesh, India
-
Transit Point: Raxaul, Bihar
-
Destination: Birgunj, Province No. 2, Nepal
My journey commenced in the early hours from Lanka, Varanasi. A state-run and private bus network connects Varanasi to Raxaul, with travel durations ranging between 8–10 hours, depending on road conditions and halts.
The road journey, though long, is scenic and filled with snapshots of rural India. The final stretch before reaching Raxaul becomes increasingly busy with trucks and trade activity, indicating proximity to the international border.
Crossing the Raxaul–Birgunj Border
Upon reaching Raxaul, the border town in Bihar, the process of crossing into Nepal begins. For Indian citizens, the crossing is remarkably smooth. No passport or visa is required; an Aadhaar card or any government-issued photo ID suffices. For foreign nationals, the immigration post at Raxaul handles visa-on-arrival requests, subject to Nepalese regulations.
After a brief walk through the open gate connecting Raxaul to Birgunj, the Nepali side welcomes travelers with signboards in Nepali and a more relaxed pace.Immigration Tip:
Foreign nationals must ensure their passport has at least 6 months’ validity. Visa fees vary by duration of stay.
First Impressions of Nepal
Birgunj, often dubbed as Nepal's "Gateway to the South," offers a blend of Indian familiarity and Nepali character. Auto-rickshaws honk along narrow streets, tea stalls buzz with local chatter, and Nepali currency exchanges are visible right at the border.
The use of both Indian Rupees (INR) and Nepali Rupees (NPR) is common near the border, but travelers are advised to use local currency for deeper travel into Nepal.
The warmth of locals and the multilingual environment (Hindi, Nepali, Bhojpuri) ease the transition for Indian travelers and expatriates alike.
